George J. Herbert, 88, of Larksville, died Thursday, August 9, 2018 in Celtic In-Patient Unit, Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Edwardsville, he was the son of the late Philip and Margaret Wright Herbert and was a graduate of Larksville High School, Class of 1948. George is a United States Army veteran, and served his country proudly during two tours in Korea as a Staff Sergeant in the 2nd Infantry, 24th Division. He participated in numerous battles including Heart Break Ridge, Bloody Ridge and Pork Chop Hill, and was the recipient of several medals. He worked as a Communication Technician for Bell Telephone, AT&T and other communication companies, prior to retiring. He was a life long member of St. Ignatius Church, Kingston. He was also a member and past commander of Kingston VFW and Larksville American Legion, as well as a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Korean War Veterans Association of Wyoming Valley. George enjoyed spending time with his family, going on walks and was an avid reader. He was a history buff and political historian.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brothers, Philip and Timothy Herbert.
He is survived by his sisters in law, Marie Herbert, Larksville; Ruth Herbert, Dallas; nieces and nephews, Maggie Tudgay and her husband, Jeffrey Sr., Myrtle Beach, SC; Marie Wisniewski and her husband, Richard, Larksville; Janice Cadwalader, Kingston; Eileen Herbert, Larksville; Mary Herbert, Dallas; Amy Collura and her husband, Brian, Swoyersville; Timothy Herbert, Jr., Barberville, VA; 10 great nieces and nephews and many family and friends.
Funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 10:00 am from the Andrew Strish Funeral Home, 11 Wilson St. Larksville with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am in St. Ignatius Church, 339 N. Maple Ave. Kingston with great nephew, Reverend Jeffrey Tudgay, officiating. Interment will follow with Military Honors in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Pringle.
Visitation will be on Sunday, August 12, 2018, from 3 to 6 pm at the funeral home and from 9:30 am until time of service Monday morning.
